Mathematics Instruction at The Carey School
The Mathematics Program at The Carey School is directly aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Standards (NCTM). Our program emphasizes concepts in numbers and operations, geometry, measurement, data analysis, probability, and algebra through meaningful experiences involving communication, connections, logical reasoning, pattern recognition and critical thinking.
The philosophy of our mathematics program is grounded in a balanced, strong emphasis between basic skills and more constructivist, progressive strategies and methodologies. Our program ensures that children obtain a solid understanding of traditional mathematical algorithms and at the same time provides children with a “tool kit” of alternative strategies to employ in different mathematical real world situations. We provide direct instruction in operational algorithms and also encourage children to explore the development of their own methodologies with an emphasis on connections and reasoning skills. The overarching objective of our mathematics program is to cultivate young mathematicians who think critically about the conceptually deep world of mathematics, who apply logical reasoning skills to justify mathematical conclusions, and who have a solid understanding of core mathematical facts.
Our program emphasizes both the process and the product. Instead of focusing primarily on the “correct answer,” we encourage children to write about mathematical thinking, to make connections between mathematical concepts and real world applications, and to analyze and evaluate different strategies. Our core belief in differentiated instruction ensures that we meet the needs of each individual child through flexible grouping according to ability level, interest, and learning style.
Importantly, our program also fosters a love and pure joy for mathematics as we believe strongly that a positive attitude translates into meaningful, purposeful learning opportunities for all students.
The Carey School Standards for Mathematics Education are included below in PDF format to provide the scope and sequence of our mathematics program. Our learning goals and objectives are developmentally appropriate and are labeled as beginning, developing and secure understandings at each grade level. We encourage you to view this document as it provides a comprehensive overview of our program.
