The Show Must Go On! (K-5th Grade) | Mondays

$205

Mondays 3:10 - 4:20 pm
Room: KG Classroom
Grades: K - 5th

Have you ever dreamt of playing a character in front of an audience? Well now here's your chance. We will be putting on a theater show with your help -- if you'd like to join us. We will pretend to be someone other than ourselves in a make-believe story. There will be some lines to learn, costumes to wear and maybe some decorations to make for our big performance. If you want to entertain, then let's put on a show!

In order to put on a great drama, we would like to accept all age groups to participate. Younger students who are not yet ready to read their lines are still welcomed to join the class, and will take on more basic roles to match their ability and develop their confidence.

Since theater by it's very nature is a cooperative medium, all members must depend on each other for rehearsals and the final performance. This is a group activity, so each student will have a vital part of the final performance. Therefore, students should make a strong commitment to attend all classes and practice their lines on a regular basis. Illness or unforeseen interruptions do happen of course, but it is hoped attendance will be very high -- so the result of our fun and hard work will be an amazing show!

This class is for grades K - 5 and meets on Mondays in the KG classroom from 3:10 - 4:20 PM. Please note: this class is an hour and twenty minutes long to provide enough time for the students to prepare and rehearse for the final performance.

The children are welcome to bring a snack to eat during the first 10 minutes of class.

Chain Reactions with Mr. Desroches (2 - 5th Grade) | Tuesdays

$220

Tuesdays 3:20 - 4:20 pm
Room: Thinkering Lab
Grades: 2 - 5

In this hands-on class, girls and boys will learn how to create chain reaction (Rube Goldberg) machines out of ordinary household items such as cardboard, cardboard tubes, marbles, ping pong balls, Hot Wheels track, Hot Wheels cars, dominos, popsicle sticks, wooden blocks, bamboo skewers, tape, string, rubber bands, plastic cups, hot glue and much, much more! Each student will use a 16” x 22” work tray upon which to build their “tabletop” chain reaction machine. This way their machine can be moved and stored in the Thinkering Lab between classes, so the machine is an on-going work-in-progress, expanding week by week. The goal is to create a machine with as many sequential chain reactions as possible, and one that works every time we set it up. Eventually students may want to work side-by-side so the conclusion of one machine will trigger the beginning of the next student’s machine. There are so many possibilities!

To help make our machines successful, students will learn essential planning and building concepts. We will study the kinds of simple mechanisms and triggers that make chain reactions work and be repeatable. Thinkering Lab tools and materials will be employed to help build our mechanisms, and Mr. Desroches will use the drill press, scroll saw and other power tools to custom design parts students may need for their machines. Throughout the term we’ll learn about simple machines (the incline plane, lever, pulley, etc).

In this class students will be brainstorming, problem solving, building, testing and iterating! We will use small tools with supervision (X-Acto knives, hobby saws, scissors, etc). By the end of the term each student will have an amazing chain reaction machine to showcase on the last day of class!

This class is for grades 2 - 5 and meets in the Thinkering Lab on Tuesdays from 3:20 - 4:20 pm. There are eight classes this term.

  1. Tuesday, February 25
  2. Tuesday, March 3
