Experiential Learning

At Carey, our learning extends beyond the classroom.

Inspiring Spaces for Learning

At Carey, we’ve designed our campus to help our students feel comfortable and inspire them to learn. Step inside our classrooms and you’ll see welcoming displays of student perspective, creativity, and teamwork. We have an amazing outdoor campus, and we utilize our multiple outdoor spaces for extra learning, meaningful experiences, and fun! Storytime in the garden, caring for and feeding our Carey chickens, science experiments in the amphitheater, a social studies conversation on the grass…we can take our learning anywhere!

Beyond the Classroom

Throughout the year, we take students off campus for developmentally appropriate field trips. Breaking with our daily routines, we complement in-class curricula with safe explorations of our local community to give our students a new perspective. Recent outings include trips to art museums, farms, and performing arts groups. Our Outdoor Ed experiences include an overnight camping trip for our 3rd graders to the Presidio, the 4th graders attending a two-day exploration of California history in Coloma and a three-night comprehensive outdoor educational experience for our 5th graders in Yosemite.

Technology

Our teachers are well-versed in using technology as a tool to support elementary learning. Our classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, connectivity, 1:1 iPads in K-3rd grades and 1:1 Chromebooks in 3rd-5th grades. Our Thinkering Lab offers extra space for hands-on problem solving. Our goal is to offer balanced learning for the 21st century by blending the best of traditional tools and modern technology.
