Mark is the parent of three Carey alumni. He received his B.A. from Georgetown University, M.A.T. from Stanford University and M.B.A. from J.L. Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Mark was born and raised in San Francisco and currently works in private equity at Horsley Bridge Partners in San Francisco. He spent a number of years working in education, first as a corps member for Teach For America in New Orleans, then as a teacher and administrator in independent schools and finally as the director of a charter school in Redwood City. He is former board treasurer of the California Historical Society and is a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Burlingame.

Kristy Tosh Cowan is the mother of one current Carey student and two Carey graduates. Currently the Board Vice President and Chair of the Governance Task Force, Kristy has previously served as Secretary and has chaired the Trustee and Advancement committees. She received her bachelor’s degree in public policy from Duke University and her law degree from American University, Washington College of Law.  As a partner with the law firm of Brustein & Manasevit, PLLC, Kristy has more than two decades of experience representing state education agencies, public school districts, nonpublic K-12 schools, and post-secondary institutions in audit defense and federal grants management issues.  Kristy has authored numerous books and articles on federal laws affecting education, particularly focusing on the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  Kristy works as an advancement professional at Crystal Springs Uplands School.  She has contributed to the Carey parent community in numerous capacities for Walkfest, the auction, serving as Room Parent, and singing with the Carey parent rock band, The Funrazers.

Miguel, the parent two Carey students, received his B.B.A. in finance with a concentration in accounting from The University of Texas at Austin and his M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Miguel was born in London, England, and raised in Houston, Texas, but has called California home for many years. Miguel is currently a Managing Director in the Investment Banking Division at Nomura Securities, based in San Francisco, where he covers private equity firms on the west coast with a focus on capital raising and strategic advisory work. He is also leading the build-out of a broader investment banking presence on the West Coast for Nomura. Prior to joining Nomura in 2014, Miguel spent 15 years at Morgan Stanley, the last 13 of which were in the San Francisco office leading coverage of the private equity community on the West Coast. Prior to business school Miguel spent two years with Morgan Stanley in London covering oil and gas companies in the UK, Continental Europe, and Russia. Miguel is currently on the Board of the San Francisco Zoological Society and a member of the Development Board at The University of Texas.

Mike Ryerson is the parent of two Carey students.  He currently is the Board Secretary, and sits on the Board's Advancement, Finance and Executive committees. He has also co-chaired the Annual Fund and worked on the Carey Forward campaign.  Mike holds a degree in mathematics and computer science from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in finance from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  He currently works as a Senior Researcher at the Voleon Group, a Berkeley-based hedge fund focused on the applications of machine learning to investing.  Previously, he worked for ten years at BlackRock, where he was the head of research for a quantitative hedge fund.  He has also been a lecturer at the Stanford GSB, and currently serves on the Steering Committee for the Master's in Financial Engineering program at U.C. Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Jean is the parent of one Carey student. She received her B.A. from Reed College and her teaching credential from San Francisco State University. Jean has taught high school at several independent schools in Belmont, Hillsborough, Palo Alto, and San Mateo. She served as Mathematics Department Head at Notre Dame High School for four years and most recently as Department Head at Castilleja School in Palo Alto. Jean has volunteered on WASC accreditation visiting committees, and developed new courses and curriculum to meet the changing needs of students in the 21st century.

Lydia is the mother of two Carey students and two Carey graduates. Lydia previously volunteered on the CSPA Community Events team organizing fun events like the Carey Family Jam, school-wide bowling, roller-skating, and camping trips. She continues to co-chair the Annual Fund and has thoroughly enjoyed being a room parent many times over, working on auction projects, building classroom websites, and serving as a roving photographer. Lydia is Board president of her children’s Greek School where she also chairs Fundraising and Community Events. In the summer, she volunteers as the staff physician at her children’s Greek Immersion camp. Lydia holds a B.A. in International Relations and Spanish from Tufts University and an M.D. from UC Davis School of Medicine. She completed residency and served as Chief Resident at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco where she was part of the Admissions Committee and helped organize community outreach providing medical care to San Francisco’s indigent population. Lydia is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and currently works part-time as a Hospitalist and in the Medical Weight Management program at Kaiser.

Kim is the mother of one Carey student and two Carey alumni. Kim holds a B.A. in English literature from Wittenberg University and has a background in education and corporate recruiting. Kim worked as a director for a summer academic enrichment program, which took American middle and high school students to live and study at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. After relocating to the Bay Area, Kim worked in high-tech recruiting and human resources. Kim has served in a variety of capacities at The Carey School including Annual Fund Co-Chair, CSPA Secretary, Co-Chair of the Community Events and Faculty/Staff Appreciation committees, Events Co-Chair for the Capital Campaign, room parent, committee lead for Walkfest, Annual Fund Ambassador, and new family mentor. In addition, Kim was actively involved in the Parca Auxiliary, where she served on the Board for several years.

Jean is the parent of three Carey students. She is Chair of the Advancement committee, is on the Finance and Executive committees, and is a past President of the CSPA. Jean has also volunteered at school in a number of other capacities including Co-Vice President of the CSPA Executive Team, lead roles on auction and Walkfest, Annual Fund Class Ambassador, and room parent. Jean previously worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and human capital consulting at Towers Perrin. She has been active with other nonprofit organizations including serving as VP of Development on the Parca Auxiliary Board as well as serving on the Boards of the Burlingame Library Foundation and Burlingame Mothers Club. Jean received her M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in economics and psychology from Wesleyan University.

Ben is the father of one Carey student and one Carey graduate. He served as one of the Co-Heads of the Broad Reach fundraising effort in the school's capital campaign. Ben graduated from Harvard College in 1995 with a degree in Economics and was Captain of the Men's Ice Hockey team. Currently he is Co-Founder and Chief Financial Officer of Colovore, a data center provider in Santa Clara, and was formerly a Partner at Spectrum Equity Investors, where he spent 13 years as a private equity investor focused on investments in growing media and communications companies.

Robert, the parent of three children at Carey, received his B.A. from Princeton University in economics with a concentration in math. He is the CEO of Tora Holdings, a leading provider of software and financial services to hedge funds. Robert has spent over 15 years in the software industry holding executive positions in several start-up and early stage companies in Europe, North America, and Asia. He began his career at Deloitte working in various positions in audit, consulting, and mergers & acquisitions groups. Robert is also on the Board of Directors & Finance Committee of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, which promotes and develops the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, competition, and academic excellence through amateur football.

Joe is the parent of one Carey student and one Carey graduate. Born and raised in the Monterey area, Joe has a B.A. from University of California at Davis and a J.D. from the University of Chicago. Joe is the founder of BrightPoint Security, a fast-growing private tech company in Silicon Valley. Joe has held board positions with private companies, nonprofits, and industry associations.

Mason is the proud father of one Carey student and one Carey graduate. He is currently Chair of the Committee of Trustees and has served as a class agent and Annual Fund Class Ambassador, Co-Chair of the Annual Fund, and part of a Carey mentor family. He is best known, perhaps regrettably, for appearing as Ryan Seacrest at a past auction. Mason has an economics degree from Harvard and an M.B.A. from Stanford, and is currently a partner at Cornerstone Capital, a Palo Alto-based investment firm.

Bobbie is the mother of two Carey graduates. With a B.A. from Harvard College, Bobbie has served in various volunteer capacities, including: creating Public Service Announcements for nonprofits such as Goodwill, American Red Cross, and the San Francisco Food Bank; providing companionship to Hospice patients; raising funds for Hillsborough Beautification Foundation; and co-directing the Alopecia Areata Initiative, a family foundation.

Gary is the parent of one Carey student. Gary currently serves on the Advancement and Buildings & Grounds committees. He has previously served on the Investment sub-committee, as Carey Walkfest co-chair, part of a Carey Mentor Family, and has helped with class auction projects. Gary is also an active participant in Carey Dads' Night Out gatherings. Gary previously worked in investment banking at Merrill Lynch in New York and currently works in investment management at Franklin Templeton Investments in San Mateo. Gary is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Systems Engineering from the School of Engineering and a BS and MBA in Finance from the Wharton School.

Julie is the mother of 3 children at Carey. She has served on the CSPA Executive Committee as President and Vice President, as an Annual Fund Ambassador, on the Carey Mentor Committee, the technical team of the Carey Auction, and as a dedicated Room Parent. Julie and her family especially enjoy the strong sense of community, commitment, and learning that radiate from the families, faculty, and the administration. She and her family have made so many great friends so far. Her kids love everything about Carey, and she will funnel that love and energy into her role on the Board and in serving the school.

Steve is the father of one Carey student and one Carey graduate. He served as Treasurer and on the Executive committee for three years and is currently Chair of the Audit committee. He has over 25 years of experience in the biotechnology and health care industries. Currently he is Chief Commercial Officer for Puma Biotechnology, with a focus on breast cancer. Previously he spent over a decade at Genentech  in a variety of leadership positions overseeing areas such as business operations, product launches, marketing and managed care. Early in his career, he also held roles in business strategy and finance at Astra Zeneca and Kaiser Permanente. Steve received his B.S. from the University of California, Davis, and his Masters of Health Administration from the University of Southern California.

Kathy is the Chief Financial and Operating Officer of Castilleja School. She previously served as the Head of School at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, an independent boarding/day school in Minnesota, where she has been instrumental in leading the development of a new master campus plan, launching the Engineering Center of Excellence Program, and overseeing the growth of innovative pedagogies such as blended learning and design thinking. Prior to Shattuck, she worked at Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, OR, for seven years as the CFO and Interim Head of School. Before focusing on schools, she spent a number of years in the private sector as a CFO. She received her BA from Stanford University and MBA from Yale.

Sunita is the proud parent of two Carey students and one Carey graduate. At Carey Sunita has held roles as a room parent, auction committee member and chairperson of Spaghetti dinner. Sunita has a long career in the high-tech industry, having worked in senior product and marketing positions at Siebel Systems and multiple start ups. She currently is VP Product at Next Force Technology. Sunita is a Fulbright Scholar, and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School with Honors, and a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Commerce & Administration from Victoria University (New Zealand).

Kim is the mother of three Carey students. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College and her M.A. from University of San Francisco in counseling psychology. After several years in marketing and advertising, Kim switched gears to education. She taught fourth and fifth grade and Social Emotional Learning at the Phillips Brooks School in Menlo Park, CA. Kim also worked at Jordan Middle School with Adolescent Counseling Services. Kim founded and coached the Varsity Girls Lacrosse program at Gunn High School and Burlingame High School. Kim has served on the Board of Dartmouth College Athletics and Burlingame Mothers’ Club. While at Carey, she has volunteered with the Capital Campaign, as an Annual Fund Ambassador, Teacher Appreciation Committee Co-Chair, new family mentor, and room parent.

Nkia is the proud mother of two Carey graduates. She has contributed to the Carey community as a committee co-chair for the Carey Walkfest, an Annual Fund class ambassador, committee co-chair for the Carey Auction, and Admission volunteer. Nkia received her B.A. in international relations and English from Tufts University and a J.D. from the University of Southern California. She currently works as a Sr. Deputy City Attorney for the City of San Jose, where she handles various civil litigation matters including civil rights and employment cases. Previously, she represented children in child abuse and neglect matters in Los Angeles. Nkia is also a trustee of Menlo School and serves on the Board of Directors for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of San Mateo County, a nonprofit serving foster youth.

Kelly Sortino is the Head of Upper School at Crystal Springs Uplands School, a role she has held since 2012. She joined CSUS in 2009 as the Director of College Counseling and has worked in education as an Admission Officer at Princeton University, a public school English teacher, and a curriculum specialist. She has also worked in the private sector as a strategist for Google and a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group. Kelly holds an M.B.A. and M.A.Ed. from Stanford University and an A.B. in art history and certificate in teacher preparation from Princeton University.

Cristal is the mother of one Carey student, and one Carey graduate. She earned a B.S., Commerce from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Columbia University. At Carey, she co-chairs the OneCarey committee, and serves as a room parent, new family mentor, and admissions volunteer. Before moving to the Bay Area in 2014, Cristal was Executive Director of a nonprofit law firm that provided civil legal services for homeless individuals and families. Cristal also served on the boards of an independent girls’ school and an organization committed to promoting health and wellness in underserved Atlanta communities. She has also taught introductory fundraising and board development/volunteer management classes to colleagues and volunteers in the nonprofit sector.
