Duncan Lyon is the fifth Head of The Carey School since 1928.  Prior to The Carey School, he was the Assistant Head at Bentley School in Oakland, CA, where he had been for seven years. Duncan also oversaw the middle school at Bentley.  Before working at Bentley, Duncan had the privilege of being in the first cohort of the Klingenstein Leadership Academy at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, which focuses on independent school leadership.  Also in New York, he worked at the Dalton School as the Assistant High School Director. Prior to Dalton, Duncan worked at his alma mater, San Francisco University High School as a history instructor, senior dean and athletics coach.  Duncan was a longtime assistant women’s soccer coach at U.C. Berkeley, his alma mater.

Kristy Tosh Cowan is the mother of one current Carey student and two Carey graduates. Currently the Board Vice President and Chair of the Governance Task Force, Kristy has previously served as Secretary and has chaired the Trustee and Advancement committees. She received her bachelor’s degree in public policy from Duke University and her law degree from American University, Washington College of Law.  As a partner with the law firm of Brustein & Manasevit, PLLC, Kristy has more than two decades of experience representing state education agencies, public school districts, nonpublic K-12 schools, and post-secondary institutions in audit defense and federal grants management issues.  Kristy has authored numerous books and articles on federal laws affecting education, particularly focusing on the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  Kristy works as an advancement professional at Crystal Springs Uplands School.  She has contributed to the Carey parent community in numerous capacities for Walkfest, the auction, serving as Room Parent, and singing with the Carey parent rock band, The Funrazers.

Jean is the parent of three Carey students. She is Chair of the Advancement committee, is on the Finance and Executive committees, and is a past President of the CSPA. Jean has also volunteered at school in a number of other capacities including Co-Vice President of the CSPA Executive Team, lead roles on auction and Walkfest, Annual Fund Class Ambassador, and room parent. Jean previously worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and human capital consulting at Towers Perrin. She has been active with other nonprofit organizations including serving as VP of Development on the Parca Auxiliary Board as well as serving on the Boards of the Burlingame Library Foundation and Burlingame Mothers Club. Jean received her M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.A. in economics and psychology from Wesleyan University.

Miguel, the parent two Carey students, received his B.B.A. in finance with a concentration in accounting from The University of Texas at Austin and his M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Miguel was born in London, England, and raised in Houston, Texas, but has called California home for many years. Miguel is currently a Managing Director in the Investment Banking Division at Nomura Securities, based in San Francisco, where he covers private equity firms on the west coast with a focus on capital raising and strategic advisory work. He is also leading the build-out of a broader investment banking presence on the West Coast for Nomura. Prior to joining Nomura in 2014, Miguel spent 15 years at Morgan Stanley, the last 13 of which were in the San Francisco office leading coverage of the private equity community on the West Coast. Prior to business school Miguel spent two years with Morgan Stanley in London covering oil and gas companies in the UK, Continental Europe, and Russia. Miguel is currently on the Board of the San Francisco Zoological Society and a member of the Development Board at The University of Texas.

Mike Ryerson is the parent of two Carey students.  He currently is the Board Secretary, and sits on the Board's Advancement, Finance and Executive committees. He has also co-chaired the Annual Fund and worked on the Carey Forward campaign.  Mike holds a degree in mathematics and computer science from Duke University, and a Ph.D. in finance from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.  He currently works as a Senior Researcher at the Voleon Group, a Berkeley-based hedge fund focused on the applications of machine learning to investing.  Previously, he worked for ten years at BlackRock, where he was the head of research for a quantitative hedge fund.  He has also been a lecturer at the Stanford GSB, and currently serves on the Steering Committee for the Master's in Financial Engineering program at U.C. Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Lydia is the mother of two Carey students and two Carey graduates. Lydia previously volunteered on the CSPA Community Events team organizing fun events like the Carey Family Jam, school-wide bowling, roller-skating, and camping trips. She continues to co-chair the Annual Fund and has thoroughly enjoyed being a room parent many times over, working on auction projects, building classroom websites, and serving as a roving photographer. Lydia is Board president of her children’s Greek School where she also chairs Fundraising and Community Events. In the summer, she volunteers as the staff physician at her children’s Greek Immersion camp. Lydia holds a B.A. in International Relations and Spanish from Tufts University and an M.D. from UC Davis School of Medicine. She completed residency and served as Chief Resident at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco where she was part of the Admissions Committee and helped organize community outreach providing medical care to San Francisco’s indigent population. Lydia is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and currently works part-time as a Hospitalist and in the Medical Weight Management program at Kaiser.

Kim is the mother of one Carey student and two Carey alumni. Kim holds a B.A. in English literature from Wittenberg University and has a background in education and corporate recruiting. Kim worked as a director for a summer academic enrichment program, which took American middle and high school students to live and study at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. After relocating to the Bay Area, Kim worked in high-tech recruiting and human resources. Kim has served in a variety of capacities at The Carey School including Annual Fund Co-Chair, CSPA Secretary, Co-Chair of the Community Events and Faculty/Staff Appreciation committees, Events Co-Chair for the Capital Campaign, room parent, committee lead for Walkfest, Annual Fund Ambassador, and new family mentor. In addition, Kim was actively involved in the Parca Auxiliary, where she served on the Board for several years.

Heidi is the proud mother of two Carey students. She has been a room parent, is co-leading the 2017 Spaghetti dinner, is an active member of the Caring at Carey Committee (CAC), and has co-led CAC's annual service learning inspired project with Hands on Bay Area and Los Cerritos School in South San Francisco. Her family has also mentored new families.

Heidi has a chemistry degree from Wellesley College. She was also inducted into Wellesley's Athletics Hall of Fame for fencing. She has an M.A in Learning, Design and Technology from Stanford's Graduate School of Education, and is a learning experience design consultant, helping teams to tackle their biggest questions in learning interactions and innovations.

Jennifer, the parent of a current Carey School student in kindergarten, received a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard University. She was born and raised in a small, rural town in Ohio.

Jennifer was the CEO of Kinsights, a digital health startup focused on pediatrics, which was acquired by Care.com. Earlier in her career, she built and launched media products at several tech companies and spent five years at Genentech, where she led physician marketing and strategy for a lymphoma drug.

She is currently a co-chair for the Carey School Community Events Committee. She is also involved in several other Bay Area nonprofits as the Vice-Chair, Board of Directors of the SF SPCA and the Chair for Common Sense Media’s Silicon Valley Advisory Council.

Ben is the father of one Carey student and one Carey graduate. He served as one of the Co-Heads of the Broad Reach fundraising effort in the school's capital campaign. Ben graduated from Harvard College in 1995 with a degree in Economics and was Captain of the Men's Ice Hockey team. Currently he is Co-Founder and Chief Financial Officer of Colovore, a data center provider in Santa Clara, and was formerly a Partner at Spectrum Equity Investors, where he spent 13 years as a private equity investor focused on investments in growing media and communications companies.

Robert, the parent of three children at Carey, received his B.A. from Princeton University in economics with a concentration in math. He is the CEO of Tora Holdings, a leading provider of software and financial services to hedge funds. Robert has spent over 15 years in the software industry holding executive positions in several start-up and early stage companies in Europe, North America, and Asia. He began his career at Deloitte working in various positions in audit, consulting, and mergers & acquisitions groups. Robert is also on the Board of Directors & Finance Committee of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, which promotes and develops the qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, competition, and academic excellence through amateur football.

Lindsay is delighted to have three boys, all at the Carey school.  She is currently the spirit committee co-chair where she plans the school spirit rallies and loves to see the children cheering, laughing and screaming for their beloved mascot, Feathers.  She has also served as the enrichment days liaison, faculty and administration appreciation chair, room parent, and as a Carey mentor family. 

Lindsay has a finance degree from The University of Texas at Austin, and is currently a consultant to several enterprise technology companies designing, implementing and facilitating various leadership development programs and processes.  Lindsay has over 18 years experience executing such programs for some of the fastest growing and highly respected companies around the globe.

Jack and his wife Nina are excited to join the “Three for Carey” club – with all three children at Carey next year.

Jack and Nina manage Sage Eldercare Solutions, an eldercare practice focused on care management, home care services, and therapeutic activities for older adults. He is a founding board member and former Treasurer of the San Francisco Village www.SFVillage.orgwhich today includes over 300 members.

Jack earned his B.A. from Brown University and his MBA from Stanford University. His interests include yoga, tennis, mountaineering and anything related to the French culture (wine, in particular).

Allison is the mother of two energetic Carey School students. She is currently the President of the Carey School Parents Association (CSPA), a member of the Walkfest Spirit Rally Team and a new family mentor. She also served as Vice-President of the CSPA for two years and co-chaired the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Committee.

Allison has been active in many other nonprofit organizations including serving on the boards of The Little Jim Club of California Pacific Medical Center, Burlingame Mother’s Club and the Parca Auxiliary.

Allison received her B.A. in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Barbara and has a background in marketing and non-profit development.

Gary is the parent of one Carey student. Gary currently serves on the Advancement and Buildings & Grounds committees. He has previously served on the Investment sub-committee, as Carey Walkfest co-chair, part of a Carey Mentor Family, and has helped with class auction projects. Gary is also an active participant in Carey Dads' Night Out gatherings. Gary previously worked in investment banking at Merrill Lynch in New York and currently works in investment management at Franklin Templeton Investments in San Mateo. Gary is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Systems Engineering from the School of Engineering and a BS and MBA in Finance from the Wharton School.

Julie is the mother of 3 children at Carey. She has served on the CSPA Executive Committee as President and Vice President, as an Annual Fund Ambassador, on the Carey Mentor Committee, the technical team of the Carey Auction, and as a dedicated Room Parent. Julie and her family especially enjoy the strong sense of community, commitment, and learning that radiate from the families, faculty, and the administration. She and her family have made so many great friends so far. Her kids love everything about Carey, and she will funnel that love and energy into her role on the Board and in serving the school.

Bill Lenihan is the parent of two children at the Carey School and is the proud coach of the boy’s 2nd Grade flag football team and the girl’s 4th grade basketball team.  

Bill holds a degree in Business and Economics from UCLA and an MBA from The Wharton School. 

He is currently President of Off Grid Electric, a roof top solar company bringing energy solutions to Africa and other emerging markets.  Prior to Off Grid Electric, he spent 15 years as a private equity investor at Goldman Sachs and Calera Capital.

Kathy is the Chief Financial and Operating Officer of Castilleja School. She previously served as the Head of School at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, an independent boarding/day school in Minnesota, where she has been instrumental in leading the development of a new master campus plan, launching the Engineering Center of Excellence Program, and overseeing the growth of innovative pedagogies such as blended learning and design thinking. Prior to Shattuck, she worked at Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, OR, for seven years as the CFO and Interim Head of School. Before focusing on schools, she spent a number of years in the private sector as a CFO. She received her BA from Stanford University and MBA from Yale.

Mike is the father of two Carey students (Pre-K & 1st Grade). He has served as an Annual Fund Class Ambassador and as part of a Carey mentor family. 

Professionally, Mike has founded and worked in several Silicon Valley start-ups, is an active advisor and, in a previous life, practiced corporate law in Manhattan for several years. 

He has a BA in Economics from Wittenberg University, a JD from Capital University Law School and an LLM (International Law) from Georgetown University Law Center. He is coach of his son's baseball team, an avid golfer and a bad guitar player.

Kim is the mother of three Carey students. She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College and her M.A. from University of San Francisco in counseling psychology. After several years in marketing and advertising, Kim switched gears to education. She taught fourth and fifth grade and Social Emotional Learning at the Phillips Brooks School in Menlo Park, CA. Kim also worked at Jordan Middle School with Adolescent Counseling Services. Kim founded and coached the Varsity Girls Lacrosse program at Gunn High School and Burlingame High School. Kim has served on the Board of Dartmouth College Athletics and Burlingame Mothers’ Club. While at Carey, she has volunteered with the Capital Campaign, as an Annual Fund Ambassador, Teacher Appreciation Committee Co-Chair, new family mentor, and room parent.

Kelly Sortino is the Head of Upper School at Crystal Springs Uplands School, a role she has held since 2012. She joined CSUS in 2009 as the Director of College Counseling and has worked in education as an Admission Officer at Princeton University, a public school English teacher, and a curriculum specialist. She has also worked in the private sector as a strategist for Google and a management consultant with the Boston Consulting Group. Kelly holds an M.B.A. and M.A.Ed. from Stanford University and an A.B. in art history and certificate in teacher preparation from Princeton University.

Sarah is the proud mother of one Carey student and one Carey graduate. Sarah joined the Carey community in 2014 after relocating to the Bay Area from New York. She has thoroughly enjoyed working with the CSPA in various roles. Sarah has been a room parent, co-chair at Caring at Carey, Annual fund class ambassador, Health and wellness chair, Auction committee member and helped with class auction projects.

Sarah is an M.D., and has also holds an MPH from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University. Before moving back to New York, Sarah worked as a health consultant and practiced medicine in Pakistan. She is currently an independent healthcare consultant. Sarah has been inspired by her childrens' experience at Carey and she would like to bring that passion, along with her professional experience, for the advancement of the Carey School mission.

Caroline is the mother of two Carey students.  She grew up in North Carolina and is a graduate of Duke University with a bachelor’s degree in history.  She also earned her MBA from The Wharton School. 

 

She has nearly twenty years of experience in asset allocation, portfolio construction and investment manager research. Currently, Caroline is the Senior Investment Strategist for BNY Mellon Wealth Management. In this role, she is the portfolio manager for several mutual funds and helps make tactical investment decisions across all client portfolios for BNY Mellon worldwide.

 

Caroline enjoys being active in the Carey community. She has volunteered as a Room Parent, an Annual Fund Ambassador, an Admissions Office Volunteer, a Mentor to new incoming families, and as a co-host of the Carey Sleepover Pay-to-Play.  Caroline and her family love being at Carey and feel lucky to be part of this joyful community.

Cristal is the mother of one Carey student, and one Carey graduate. She earned a B.S., Commerce from the University of Virginia and an MBA from Columbia University. At Carey, she co-chairs the OneCarey committee, and serves as a room parent, new family mentor, and admissions volunteer. Before moving to the Bay Area in 2014, Cristal was Executive Director of a nonprofit law firm that provided civil legal services for homeless individuals and families. Cristal also served on the boards of an independent girls’ school and an organization committed to promoting health and wellness in underserved Atlanta communities. She has also taught introductory fundraising and board development/volunteer management classes to colleagues and volunteers in the nonprofit sector.
